Omar

Omar's medical treatment continues at Children's Hospital in Boston. The explosive injury Omar sustained after US forces opened fire on a passenger vehicle near Samarra caused severe burn injuries of the scalp, the right side of his face and his right ear. He lost the thumb and index finger on his right hand, which is also severely burned. The other burned areas include the right forearm and a severe palmar burn on the left hand that essentially fixed his left thumb to his palm. These injuries left Omar severely disfigured and with minimal, crude use of his hands and arms.

Dr. John Meara and Dr. Brian Labow performed a series of operations to improve Omar's function and reduce his disfigurement. Physicians at Children's Hospital have donated their services to help Omar, and the Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation made a generous contribution to help defray facility costs. In addition, social services and therapists have worked continuously to help Omar through this difficult process of reconstruction. Omar is an intelligent, brave and energetic child who must cope not only with severe physical injuries, but also with the loss of his mother who was killed in the attack.

Several more months of intensive treatment will be required before Omar and his father return to the Middle East.
