This event heralds a week marking the 5th anniversary of the Iraq War.
The first short film, Caught in the Crossfire, covers what happened in Fallujah back in 2004. It is a rare and shattering glimpse into the true devastation of this war & occupation upon the civilian population. It will be followed by a presentation by Ann Cothran of No More Victims and a showing of their outreach video. She will also show a short film called Salee's Story, which tells of Salee, an Iraqi girl injured in a US missile strike in November 2006. This will then be followed by a presentation on the work of No More Victims, which brought Salee to Greenville, South Carolina for medical care and prosthetics. Ann Cothran will also show a video of the time Salee spent in Greenville and how that visit impacted the people who interacted with her.
An Asheville group of No More Victims is currently raising funds for Salee's sister Rusul, who was also injured in the same US missile strike. We hope to bring her to Greenville for medical treatment also.
A discussion will follow this presentation.

These events will happen on the day that marks 4 ½ years of US occupation of Iraq. There is no charge for these events, but we will do fundraising during the events for No More Victims. Please join us in making them welcome in Asheville.
Potluck - 5:30 PM at First Congregational Church on Oak Street in downtown Asheville. Please bring utensils and plates and a vegetarian dish to share.

Journey of Hope and Healing:
Walking to Rebuild Abdul Hakeem’s Home
When a mortar bomb hit Abdul Hakeem’s family home in Fallujah two years ago, the house was virtually destroyed and they lost most of their furniture. His father and brothers were able to get the materials together to rebuild one-fourth of what they had, and that is where Abdul Hakeem’s mother and 8 siblings are living now. They estimate that the cost of materials to rebuild the rest of their home will be about $10,000, and the labor will be done by the family with Abdul Hakeem’s help. In the bombing, Abdul Hakeem’s mother was also injured, losing her unborn child. She received treatment in Iraq, but is still in need of a $2,000 surgery to give support to her damaged abdominal wall.
Pittsburgh has shown tremendous support and compassion to Abdul Hakeem and his family, from the doctors and hospitals that have volunteered their services to the families who have warmly welcomed them. We will continue to support them as they return to Iraq in the coming months. In the Journey of Healing and Hope, starting and ending at The Islamic Center (4100 Bigelow Blvd), we will walk through Oakland, experiencing on our way the journey that Abdul Hakeem and his father have made. As we learn about their journey to Pittsburgh, we support them as they look forward to the next journey, the journey back to Fallujah and the home and family that awaits them. Please join us in this important endeavor by walking with us or by giving as you are able to help this amazing, resilient family rebuild their home and their lives.
