Healing Children of Conflict / Grand Rapids

Healing Children of Conflict (HCC) , a coalition of several local organizations in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is now working to secure medical treatment for Sayed, an Afghan boy who suffered a severe head injury in a US air strike. This promising development begins the third phase of NMV's planned evolution -- the adoption of the NMV model by independent organizations that manage all aspects of their individual projects. The group helped raise funds for Salee's second trip the the US last year, and NMV will continue to consult with HCC as their project develops.

Healing Children of Conflict to Help Afghan Boy

Healing Children of Conflict is working to provide medical assistance to Sayed, an Afghan boy injured in US air strikes against villages in Afghanistan. According to villagers and local Afghan officials, 147 civilians were killed in the strikes. Here is a Reuter’s report about the attacks:

You can read more coverage here, here, and here, and a report by Human Rights Watch here.

At this stage, HCC is arranging for Sayed to receive a thorough medical examination in Kabul. He suffered a depressed skull fracture and a relatively small amount of contused (and presumably contaminated) brain was removed.  A small section of skull bone was also destroyed, which can be treated by a bone graft or custom implant. He continues to experience intense headaches, and the severity of his head injury could be associated with cognitive problems and the possible development of epilepsy.
