Portland Maine: Noora and Afef - Home in Iraq
August 11th, 2009 |July, 2009
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to fill you in on how Noora and Afef are adjusting now that they’re back home. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to “webcam” with them yet, due to a combination of electricity and computer problems in Iraq, but we’re not giving up hope. We have been able to speak with them numerous times on the phone, however, the most recent time yesterday afternoon.
The report from Afef is generally good. He says that they are both “so happy, very happy!” to be back home in spite of the 130 degree temperatures. He has not been in any danger since they arrived home, but said “the life is very hard” referring to the temperatures and the ongoing sporadic electricity and available clean water etc. He expressed his gratitude for the generosity of the “Maine people” which has allowed him to begin fixing up his father’s mill and to purchase a new piece of furniture making equipment. His son, Mustafa has been helping him out in the mill and together they have already made numerous pieces of furniture, which they plan to sell. He has also been able to work on their house, which along with the mill, was damaged in the war. He laughed about barely having time to sleep, but is thoroughly enjoying his increased activity level. He plans on attempting to get his teaching job back in the fall, and continue with making furniture.
Noora is doing beautifully, from all reports. She’s been “playing with her friends and sisters and swimming in the river” per Afef….”her head is good, very good…..now she can play with all the children, no problem”. Afef has taken a lot of pictures since their arrival home, which he said he will pass along as soon as the computer issue is resolved. She loves her baby sister and has been helping Afra out regularly, with a bit of cooking. Unfortunately our conversations with Noora are fairly brief, as Afef has indicated that she is quickly losing her “fluency” in English. One lovely resounding English phrase that she is still able to communicate, however, is …..”I’m so-o-o happy!” …………which is music to our ears
They asked that I pass along their message that they “miss everybody, and thank you, thank you for helping Noora”. Best Wishes to you all,
Susi and Doug
