Portland Oregon: Mustafa’s Pain Subsides; Visits Can Resume

September 28th, 2008 | Posted by Maxine

Mustafa came through surgery great! Yesterday was, I think, a turning point for that post-surgery pain and discomfort. He seems to be feeling better and now the tubes and IVs are gradually getting removed! I think the best moment was when he could have a drink of water as he was not able to have anything by mouth for over 3 days. Mustafa has been an excellent “trooper” during this whole process, which has been painful and unfamiliar. Ahmed too is amazing — such patience, grace and dedication to his son. They are both so wonderful to be getting to know.

It is fine to resume visits starting on Sunday — we would just really urge you to KEEP THE VISITS BRIEF — they are both exhausted and really need to rest.

Again, thank you to all who have been bringing food. Ahmed has eaten well, and soon Mustafa will also be back to eating!! If you want to sign up for food, please send us your name and we will forward on to the food coordinator.

A fund-raising letter/strategy will be coming your way (!) early next week. This because the medical expenses were more than anticipated. That said, we want to extend a HUGE thank you to all the doctors who have provided Mustafa’s care. They are ALL waiving their fees. DCH too has been incredibly generous. We will celebrate them in the near future, so if you want to help in organizing that event, please let us know.

A very special recognition and thank you to the General Surgeon, Dr. Garret Zallen, who has advocated so long and hard to get Mustafa the care he needs. Dr Zallen was the general surgeon who did the bowel surgery part of last week’s procedure. Garret — you are THE best!!

Shukran to all,
Maxine
